For the game I am currently working on this year - Natural Disaster: A Butterfly's Guide to Mass Destruction - I was in charge of making the textures for all of the pinball designs. We have a level that takes place in a 50s themed arcade with a variety of pinball games. All of the games are designed and based off of the other Capstone games being done this year. The references to the other games being done for our class is one of our fun easter eggs, as many other teams also have references in their games to them.
This process took a long time as we kept changing what we wanted from the machines and how we wanted them to look. I was able to get the designs done pretty fast since I based each one off of the specific game assigned to each machine, but progressing from there was more difficult. I had to wait to hear back from the other teams to get permission to use their logos and then actually put them onto the maps. I also figured we would use a simple metal texture for the base of the machines, but we ended up switching to wood. Because of this, I had to redo the UV maps that I had done earlier for the machines to make the wood texture I had made earlier line up better and scale correctly. I had to switch between Maya and UnReal so much and reimport the machines multiple times to get them looking right in game. I also did the designs for the screen behind the logos and did the placement, collision, scaling, and organization of all the machines. Luckily the machines were already modeled, but I still had to do the UV mapping, texturing, and material assignments in UnReal multiple different times. Overall, I am really happy with how they look and cannot wait for the other teams to see their shout outs when we publish our game soon!
